If Your Coffee Tastes Flat, Try This

  1. Use fresher beans: Coffee loses its aromatic oils soon after roasting. The Cowboy Coffee Company. roasts their beans to order. Try to use the beans within 2 -4 week.
  2. Grind right before brewing: Ground coffee goes stale faster.  Grinding fresh preserves, the volatile compounds that give coffee depth and aroma.  The Cowboy Coffee Co. offers whole beans in all our blends.
  3. Adjust the grind size: ~If your coffee tastes flat or dull it may be under-extracted - try a finer grind. ~ If it's bitter or harsh, it may be over-extracted -try a coarser grind.  The Cowboy Coffee Company offers ground coffee in Standard, Coarse and Espresso grinds.
  4. Check your water: Flat flavor often comes from poor water quality. Use filtered water or water with moderate mineral content. Bad tasting water makes bad tasting coffee.
  5. Experiment with brew ratio: A standard starting point is 1:16 (1gram of coffee for 16 ml of water). Too much water can wash out flavor.
  6. Mind the brew temperature: Aim for 195 - 205 degrees F (90-96 C).  Cooler water under-extracts coffee and dulls its character.
  7. Clean your equipment: Oils and residue from old brews can mute fresh flavors - clean grinders, filters, and carafes regularly.
